We don?t know about anyone else, but we can?t feel our toes. Our fingertips, either. Ears and noses aren?t far behind; in short, it is cooo-oooold. Winter technically isn?t for another two weeks, but seriously ? ouch. Scarves and thick socks haven?t yet done the trick, so we?re moving on to the next best thing ? going to a show. From standing-room-only bodies to rhythms inciting movement, it?s the next best option at keeping warm and showing love for more-than-interesting talent. Win-win, no? Check out our picks below.
- Trampled By Turtles | Friday, December 9 | 8:00 pm | $18 | Troubadour, Los Angeles, CA ? Map | Bluegrass and elements of modern rock make up the foundation on which the Duluth, Minnesota-based band?s work flows. Known for their high-energy compositions, the contrast of more subtle approaches works just as well in their favor. Case in point, ?Where is My Mind? (whose video was released earlier this month0 is one of many tracks that manages to transport the listener somewhere other than a cubicle, and not necessarily the sporadically-lit corners of a dance club. It?s a nice place to be, wherever it is. With William Elliot Whitmore ? Buy Tickets
- Adam Ezra Group | Friday, December 9 | 10:30 pm | 21+ | $10 | Mercury Lounge, New York, NY - Map | It?s rare that we come across songwriting that is at one both introspective and personal for both performer and audience. That would be the case for Boston-based roots rock band, the Adam Ezra Group. Their knack is telling a story/evoking an emotion without telling the whole story ? a talent that goes beyond working a great sound. This show marks the release of their latest album, Ragtop Angel. With The Mommyheads - Buy Tickets
- The Antlers | Saturday, December 10 | 7:00 pm | 18+ | $25.50 | Webster Hall, New York, NY ? Map | The Antlers are good. Ordinarily we?d say that?s all you need to know, but we?ll elaborate just this once. The Brooklyn-based indie rock band?s strength is in the anatomy of a song, and we?re not really talking the 2+2 formula of the three-minute pop song. There?s enough ambiance, rock, edge, and flavor within each song that involvement becomes necessary, and desired. Very nice, we?ve got to say. Their most recent album ? aside the free release of Together towards the end of November was released this past May under the name Burst Apart. With Suuns - for more information, call (212) 353-1600.
- The Van Buren Boys | Saturday, December 10 | 11:30 pm | 21+ | $5 | Ultra Lounge, Chicago, IL ? Map | Fusing fifties and sixties rock with punk is something you don?t come across every day, but kinda like peanut butter and banana sandwiches, it works. The trick is adding a more than copious dash of that makes it distinguishable from what anyone else has tried, which is what the Chicago-based band does, and more. After hitting their show (or before; you?re preference), make sure to check out their latest album, Up All Night, which you can find here. With The Brothers Gross, Black Actress ? Buy Tickets
- Vanaprasta | Sunday, December 11 | 6:30 pm | All Ages | Free tickets at the door | The Satellite, Los Angeles, CA ? Map | Still our favorite for? well, for going on a good long while, it?s about time we point out that there?s something to be said for consistency when it comes to a band that knows what works for their audience. The Silverlake, Calif.-based [still unsigned!] band is ever-efficiently-working their take on layered rock ? their latest album, Healthy Geometry, having been released this past November. With Rocco Deluca, The Imaginary Bear and the Puppet Show, Nicole Simone (and much more) ? for more information, click here or call (323) 661-4380.
Those are our picks and we?re sticking to ?em. Who?s on your To See List this weekend?
