Reports: Rick Perry to Run For President, Announce Bid Saturday

Texas Republican Rick Perry, the nation's longest-serving governor, is running for President and will announce his bid in the coming days, according to reports.

In a crushing blow to Stephen Colbert-backed Rick Parry, Perry's people are putting out the word that he will declare his candidacy in a speech on Saturday.

Saturday is the day of the Iowa straw poll, featuring GOP candidates such as Michele Bachmann and Mitt Romney. Perry will speak from South Carolina.

Rick Perry

CNN, citing an unnamed Republican familiar with Perry's plans, noted that "previous reports had indicated that Perry would use a speech at the conservative RedState Gathering in Charleston to make his intentions clear."

That language is somewhat vague, but the Republican source went on to add that Rick Perry, 61, "will be in the Republican presidential race on Saturday."

President Barack Obama is also running for re-election.

Perry will bemaking weekend appearances in New Hampshire and Iowa, the two states with the opening contests in the race for the GOP nomination.

Fox is also reporting Perry's imminent announcement, citing sources as saying "this is it" and Perry will make "a definitive announcement Saturday."

The Texan will attempt to unite the Republicans' fiscally and socially conservative wings and tout his job-creation record in the Lone Star State.

Excited about Perry? Have no idea who he is? Sound off!

Usher Says New 'Rev Pop' Project Is A 'Movement'

Singer teases his new project by pointing to past hits like 'Yeah!' and 'OMG.'

With the success of songs like "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love," "Hot Tottie" and "OMG," Usher had himself a fairly massive 2010. But rather than rest on his laurels, he's looking to build on his big year, not with an album, but with a "movement."

It's something he's calling "Rev Pop" — or, simply, "Rev" — and though he's already teased his idea in a video with David Guetta (Akon is also involved), he has yet to speak in full about it. So when MTV News caught up with Ush before the 53rd annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles at the (Belvedere) RED launch party, we asked him about his next musical endeavor. And though he didn't reveal much, he did let it be known that "Rev" isn't exactly something new. In fact, he's been doing it for a while now.

"I'll give it to you this way: At a later date, I'll tell you more about Rev Pop, but if I were to give you a flash: I've done it before, I did it with 'Yeah!' " he said, "taking a cultural experience, and also worldwide recognition of a feeling, and putting the soul in the middle of it. Not allowing it to shift heavily to R&B genre, or pop. I did it again with 'OMG,' once again putting the soul in the middle of it, which was an electric-pop experience, with the soul.

"It's bringing those elements together to tell a story, that was born here," he said, gesturing toward his heart, "And that's what Rev Pop is. There's more, I mean, I could really elaborate, but that's just what I'm going to tell you right now. 'Rev' is what it's called ... the movement is called Rev."

Usher wouldn't say just when his fans would be getting their first taste of Rev, but whenever they do, it sounds like they're going to be impressed ... if not a little shocked.

"Stay alive," he smiled, "Because you're definitely going to be in for a surprise."

Nicki Minaj 'Raises The Bar' On Britney Spears Tour

'I wanted my set to be more than an opening act, 'cause, you know, I did that already,' she tells MTV News of Femme Fatale Tour.

Nicki Minaj is known for her brightly colored persona, music and wardrobe, so it's no surprise that the New York rapper has managed to win over pop audiences night after night on the Femme Fatale Tour, during which she fiercely graces the stage before Britney Spears.

Minaj's high-octane energy and ability to put a pop spin on her hip-hop tracks shines through in her warm-up show. Her theater-kid side also comes out in the multi-media set, complete with dance routines, videos and Minaj's many alter egos.

The ability for a pop audience to identify with Minaj's sometimes NSFW themes is even a shock to the head Barbie herself. "Yeah, I'm always surprised," she told MTV News. "I don't really expect them to know all the records, but I guess it just kind of transcends all genres of music at this point."

Minaj set out to give her fans, both old and new, a spectacle. "I wanted my set to be more than an opening act, 'cause, you know, I did that already," she said, referring to her opening gig alongside mentor Lil Wayne on the I Am Still Music Tour. "I always like to raise the bar for myself, and that's what I did. I think it's important to give people what they paid for."

In addition to a set full of fan favorites that are earning her more and more Barbies each and every night, Minaj also has multiple costume changes that are sexy, cool and tough all at the same time.

"I didn't want to do a lot of color. I sort of wanted to tone it down and sort of bring the color back from my own tour, so I wanted it to be very sophisticated and sort of, you know, futuristic and all over the place," she said. "But sort of cagey and sort of epic."

Kings Of Leon Doc Director Unfazed By Band's Drama

'They're family,' 'Talihina Sky' helmer Stephen Mitchell says, confident that Kings will regroup after canceling U.S. tour.
By James Montgomery

For all the unedited, un-sober moments in the Kings of Leon's "Talihina Sky" documentary (and there are a lot of them), none stands out quite like frontman Caleb Followill's bleary-eyed, whiskey-and-marijuana-soaked confessional, which unspools toward the end of the film and is a jaw-dropper, to say the very least.

When the film premiered back in April, the scene stuck in most folks' memories because it was so unfiltered — Followill makes no attempt to hide the fact that he's rifling through inebriants, which is noteworthy since he and his bandmates executive-produced the film and surely had final say over what made the cut and what didn't. But given the events of the past few weeks, as the Kings canceled their U.S. tour after Followill's bizarre (and, many seem to think, drunken) onstage behavior at a show in Dallas, the footage takes on a decidedly darker tone ... and hints that perhaps the frontman's problems go much deeper than "exhaustion," as the band claimed in their cancellation statement.

So, with "Talihina" set to premiere August 21 on Showtime, MTV Radio spoke to its director, Stephen Mitchell, about that notorious scene and whether he now regrets keeping it in the film.

"No, and for the record, I might have been more drunk and stoned than Caleb during that interview," Mitchell laughed. "That was a night he and I sat down, actually it was during the Only By the Night sessions, and after working in the studio all day, he said, 'I want you to come over to the house and let's sit down.' ... I think it was an amazing conversation, and I think there's a lot of the film that, looking back, [I] have regrets about showing this or doing that. We made our decisions a while ago and we're sticking to them and living with them.

"But sure, they're my friends, and I care about them, and a lot of this is hard for me to watch and I'm sure it's very hard for them to watch too," he added. "So, I guess the only thing I can say is we put the honesty out there and hopefully people at least respect the boys for not bullsh---ing them."

Mitchell — who has known the Followills since the early 2000s, when they were first working toward a record contract in Nashville — said that while he hasn't spoken to the band since they scrapped their tour, he's not worried about their future. Nor did he find the reaction of Caleb's brother Jared (who took his brother to task on Twitter following the Dallas show) to be anything out of the ordinary. After all, this is a band of brothers — and a cousin — first and foremost.

"That's the way they always were. Listen, I wasn't down there, I haven't even had a chance to talk to the guys yet ... about what the heck happened. But I think some of the draw to these guys is that they are brothers and cousins; there's a magnetism to that," he said. "They say anything and everything to each other, and it is how they sort of work things out internally; they're very vocal. And I had to learn a long time ago that they're not yelling at each other, they're just communicating, and it's loud. And sometimes the stuff they say to each other ... you've got to have some thick skin to be walking around with those guys."

Mitchell said that it's that familial bond that has helped them through tough times in the past ... and will undoubtedly help them navigate through their current drama too.

"It's a fabric of the band, the roots of the band, they're family, and I think that's a reason that they've been able to find a common ground to stick together and make five albums over, what, eight-plus years?" he said. "That's really hard to do. There's not many bands making two albums, let alone five, during that time ... and I'm not a band spokesperson, I can't speak for them, they make the great music, but I believe in them and I think the family side of it will be the same reason we end up seeing more great shows and hearing more great albums from them in the future."

Beyonce Shares Her Love For Frank Ocean, Kanye West

B shares how Jay-Z and his collaborators influenced her chart-topping 4.

Beyoncé has said that she was "inspired by every type of genre" of music while making 4. But in a recent interview, she spoke in detail about how husband Jay-Z and other hip-hop artists became sonic touchstones while she recorded her fourth solo album.

"Jay had a CD playing in the car one Sunday when we were driving to Brooklyn," she tells Complex about hearing Odd Future's Frank Ocean, who co-wrote the 4 track "I Miss You." "I noticed his tone, his arrangements, and his storytelling. I immediately reached out to him — literally the next morning. I asked him to fly to New York and work on my record."

She also chose to work with Kanye West (who eventually produced "Party") after she heard "Runaway," which she admits, made her cry. "The fact that he's belting out his pain, his confusion, and his anger, with no pre-written lyrics, was so moving," she explained of her husband's frequent collaborator. "He's singing his heart out for five minutes. He is so vulnerable. I love when an artist can be so honest."

Of course, B acknowledged the direct influence of Jay's own work too. "Jay's music is more than music. His lyrics have fathered generations," she told the magazine. "All that he has overcome gives millions so much hope. There are moments when I see his lips moving, and I can see lyrics floating above his head, and I think, 'Wow! How did I get so lucky to be able to witness this level of genius so closely?' "

Beyoncé released her album in a season dominated by strong female voices, but she doesn't want any part in conversations that pit her against other divas.

"There is room on this earth for many queens," she said. "I have an authentic, God-given talent, drive and longevity that will always separate me from everyone else. I've been fortunate to accomplish things that the younger generation of queens dream of accomplishing. I have no desire for anyone else's throne. I am very comfortable in the throne I've been building for the past 15 years.

"I just want my legacy to be great music," she later added. "Someone who was a risk taker and someone who had songs that struck conversation and emotion."

Ever since they were first announced, the O Music Awards have proudly proclaimed themselves the untraditional alternative to the staid world of red carpets, acceptance speeches and celebrity glad-handing.

And for further proof of that point, consider the following: Though the inaugural O Music Awards won't premiere until April 28, the first award will be handed out on Monday at 4 p.m. ET ... and it's a big one.

For weeks, fans have been voting for the Most Innovative Music Video through the O Music Awards official site, and on Monday — in a roundtable debate moderated by MTV News' James Montgomery — a winner will be crowned.

The O Music Awards Debate for the Most Innovative Music Video, presented by FUZE®, will stream live on OMusicAwards.com and MTV.com. Joining Montgomery around the table will be acclaimed video director Wayne Isham, Mashable's Brenna Ehrlich and some super-secret celebrity guests.

The Black Eyed Peas, Ke$ha, My Chemical Romance and more will also take part in the discussion about just what makes a video truly innovative, and the folks who are nominated for the award — a list that includes Arcade Fire, Robyn, OK Go and Andy Grammer — will also Skype in to make the case for why their video deserves to be named Most Innovative.

On Monday morning, the original list of 10 nominees will be whittled down to the top five vote-getters, and then, during the debate, our roundtable and the Internet audience will cut that list down to the final three. At the very end, we'll announce the winner of the very first O Music Award for Most Innovative Video.

The inaugural O Music Awards will stream live from Las Vegas at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT on OMusicAwards.com. Tune in to see who will reign supreme in categories like Most Viral Dance, Funniest Music Short and NSFW Music Video!

Lady Gaga will sit down with Jean Paul Gaultier in the designer's Paris studio for an upcoming special set to air on the CW this September, during which she will talk about her control over her image and her beloved Little Monsters.

The channel announced that the singer and the designer will appear in the interview special, called "Gaga by Gaultier," airing on September 12 from 8 to 9:15 p.m. The program will be followed by "The CW 2011 Fall Preview Special," hosted by "Nikita" star Maggie Q and "Ringer" star Kristoffer Polaha, Reuters reports.

Gaga recently shared that her highly anticipated video for "You and I" will drop as her 1,000th tweet. As of press time, Gaga had written 991 tweets, making her nine away from the video's premiere.

The video was shot in Nebraska, and Gaga shared that it's about the lengths one goes to when he or she is in love. "It was actually kind of perfect the way it worked out 'cause the premise of the video is that I've walked all the way from New York City to Nebraska to get him back," she said. "I'm walking with no luggage and no nothing, and it's just me and my ankles are bleeding a little bit and there's grass stuck in my shoes and I've got this outfit on and it's real sort of New York clothing and I'm sprinting.

"And the [video is about the] idea that when you're away from someone you love, it's torture," she continued. "I knew I wanted the video to be about me sprinting back and walking hundreds of thousands of miles to get him back."
